A Twisted Neon Cathode
A Matrix Authentication Recognition Key (MARK) is the way a device knows a registered user from everyone else who is not supposed to be using it. Much like the common username and password systems today, marks allow computer users to access and edit anything in the Matrix. There is a catch however, most places worth hacking in the Matrix have security, agents and spiders constantly looking for unauthorized marks on sensitive icons (like that archives file of that prototype you got hired to retrieve for Mr. Johnson’s “friends”). The more marks you have on an icon, the more perceived legitimacy you have with the system, but it’s no guarantee either, some systems are smarter than others and have roving security Deckers to insure unauthorized users get the big boot quickly.
The big thing about marks, aside from access, is perception. As long as you have a mark on something, you can spot it in the Matrix without making a Matrix perception test, saving you time and resources.
